At night, the lake appeared to be made of oil. Rippling waves of black and white faded toward the shore in mesmerizing murmurs, glistening like wet onyx. Marie perched on the dock, her feet dangling off its edge and dipping into the cool, black water, swaying to the beat of light waves breaking against dirt and rocks.

Mother told her no more swimming at night. Too many feet eaters come to the water’s surface then, with webbed hands curled like claws and tongues as long as eels...

A decent, quick read.

Okay, so I favor turtles (I have quite a number as pets) so that bumped up the quality for me Laughing

This I would say is classic AD. Great story with a nice, mild level of suspense.

Nice one! The turtle really turned up the interest for me too, and I was so glad that he didn't turn out to be a turtle with a heart of gold who saved the little girl Laughing because turtles are vile, I tell ya! They are ancient and fascinating and strangely beautiful but! they will happily bite the hand that (literally) feeds them. I could feel the razor slice of the turtle's beak in the girl's throat, eck. Nice use of a sort of devolutionary idea, the feet-eating.

Didn't quite grab me-- I guess the internal conflict wasn't enough for me. Her reactions seemed somehow muted.

However, i shall say that I've handled lots of turtles and never had one bite me--that includes snappers, of which I've had two wild-caught ones as pets (found them i creeks). Maybe I'm giftes, maybe I'm lucky, but I always found they like having their heads pet (one of them got especially into it).

BTW, ever fed one a nightcrawler? It's sick but hysterical Wink

Truthfully, I've only seen clips of the original Godzilla flicks, though I did see all of the recent one with Matthew Broderick.... I think I'd like to see the originals more

in speaking of Godzilla, I did watch One Crazy Summer (think of it like the Siamese twim of Better Off Dead). It involves a Godzilla suit, among other things ... Wink

Now Gamera is very cool, and in theory, should kick Godzilla's tail...hey, he's a flying, fire-breathing turtle. I've never seen or heard that they made a film with Godzilla and Gamera. They should have combined those two a long time ago if you ask me.

" It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog " - Eisenhower

not to be confused with

" You know it's too late to pull up the stops, when your dog ring gets raided by undercover cops " - Michael Vick

But seriously I don't think there ever was a movie that featured both, in fact I believe that Gamera came from a competing studio that was trying to cash in on Godzilla's popularity. Look at it this way,
did B.O.C. ever write a song about Gamera?

Had I been drinking something, I might have spluttered it when reading your Michael Vick quote, Ernie.

T. W. Ervin II, if you were into anime, I'd advise Love Hina-- it features a fire-breating sea turtle that flies... even as a recurring and cute character Wink

BTW, who's B. O. C.?

That's hilarious, Ernie.

As a human being, what Michael Vick did is inexcusable and atrocious. As a Carolina fan: ah hah hah ha!
